Determine Your Lawn Area

Thinking about installing above-ground flowerbeds or simply planning to improve your lawns appearance?  It's important to know the square footage of your lawn area so you can purchase the correct amounts of supplies for your upcoming project.  Here is a helpful guide to determine the square footage of your property.

First: On graph paper draw an outline of your lot. You may need to pace off the rough dimensions first. Include your house, driveway, walkways, trees and any other places you will not be growing grass.

Tip: Use a current survey of your property to give accurate measurements or use your local county tax map.

To calculate the square footage. Enter measurements here:

Lot Area

length ____ft. x width ____ft. = area (a) _____sq. ft.

House Area

length ____ft. x width ____ft. = area (b) _____sq. ft.

Non-Grass Area

area (c) _____sq. ft.

Total Lawn Area

(a) _____ sq. ft. - (b) _____ sq. ft. - (c) _____ sq. ft.

DO YOU HAVE MOSS?  First, don't worry moss is not killing your grass! Moss is one of nature's ways of telling us that the growing conditions are not right for your grass to grow. Moss does not drive out grass, it just fills in the space when your good turf isn't able to grow.

There are about 50 kinds of moss that show up in lawns, and most of them love shady, moist conditions. Cool, moist shade isn't the only reason you may be seeing a short green blanket of moss where the grass is suppose to be. Here are a few helpful facts about avoiding moss and your yard:

  • Without the right amount of nutrients in the soil, it's hard for many grasses to grow. Regular fertilization is a good first step in solving this problem.

  • Plant shade-tolerant grasses.

  • Conduct a soil test to determine proper lime and fertilizer needs. Lime is necessary to reduce soil acidity. Proper fertilization will aid in preventing weed encroachment.

  • Avoid excessive watering and improve irrigation scheduling if necessary.

  • Aerify (core) compacted soils.

  • Increase air movement and light penetration in shaded areas by removing unnecessary undergrowth, trimming and pruning tree limbs and & shrubs.

  • Improve drainage.

REDUCE Watering Your Lawn By 70% - 100%

Lawns are water guzzlers, requiring about an inch of water per week during the growing season to remain green and vibrant. Many arid regions of the nation don't get anywhere near that much average rainfall, and many municipalities have restrictions on how much you can apply. To conserve water and get the best results for your lawns, gardens, trees and shrubs, remember these tips from Lawn Commander:

  • Water early in the morning
  • Water deeply and infrequently - This encourages root growth!
  • Adjust sprinkles to water only the lawn and not the sidewalk & roadway.
  • Use an automatic shutoff to control watering when you're away from home.
  • Let the rain work for you with rain barrels.
  • Water problem areas by hand.
  • Choose the right plant for the right place.

When the turf is covered with frost, or frozen, it is important to restrict lawn traffic as the fracturing of the ice crystals can puncture the leaf blades of the turf and damage to the leaf tissue.

Do Not Over Fertilize – Many homeowners tend to throw down way too much fertilizer at the first sign of green grass growth. Fertilizer should be applied four times a year. Each application is for a specific time of the season that helps prevent weeds, strengthen and promote root growth. The wrong kind of fertilizer can damage and kill your grass!

Do Not Mow Too Short! In spring it’s important that mower blades are set at a higher setting.

Water Only If Necessary – Toward the end of spring it may be necessary to water occasionally if the last few months have been dry.

Understand Your Weeds! Weeds are messengers sent by Mother Nature to teach us about the soil.
